Soft and Thick Sugar Cookies

This recipe is from my Grandma's mom, and has been passed down to me. The cookies are soft and thick and very tasty. It took me some trial and error, but I think I got it.

makes about 50 cookies

Ingredients:

- 1 cup of butter flavored shortening

- 1 teaspoon of salt

- 1 teaspoon of vanilla

- 1 teaspoon of baking soda

- 2 cups of sugar

- 2 eggs

- 5 cups of flour

- 4 teaspoons of baking powder

- 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg

- 1 cup of milk (whole or 2%)

Steps:

1) Combine shortening, salt, vanilla, and baking soda in a large bowl with a mixer.

2) Add sugar a 1/2 cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each 1/2 cup.

3) Beat the eggs together and then add to the mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly again.

4) Mix the flour, baking powder, and nutmeg together. Sift the dry mix into the mixing bowl gradually, mixing thoroughly frequently.

5) Once the dry mixture is completely combined into the mixing bowl, add the milk. Mix thoroughly.

6) Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and cool in the fridge for at least 12 hours. The longer it refrigerates, the less sticky it will be when rolled out.

7) Once the dough has been refrigerated and you are ready to bake:

- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

- Flour the counter

- Grease the cookie sheet(s)

8) Roll the dough so it is a centimeter thick. Cut desired shapes in the dough and place them on cookie sheet.

9) Bake the cookies for 8 minutes. The edges should be barely crispy golden.

10) Once out of the oven, dust sugar over the cookies.

11) Store cookies in a container with a slice of bread to keep them soft.
