This is my penultimate collection of poems for National Poetry Writing Month, with poems from Sunday the 18th to Saturday the 24th. Writing poems has been a little bit of a struggle though with exams fast approaching.
April 18th:
I read a verse novel today -
I raced through the poems,
tumbling and stumbling,
occasionally pausing for a moment
to savor a brilliant description.
afterwards my thoughts
form themselves
into lines of verse,
the words reverberating,
spoken aloud in my mind.
I form a bridge
between poetry and my life
The prompt for this poem was to take inspiration from a chapter title from the book Poemcrazy. I took inspiration from "the poem bridge."
April 19th:
Garnishing
All my dishes,
Relishing the delicious flavor,
Love of my life,
Intense flavor
Cascading everywhere
April 19th is National Garlic Day, so I wrote an acrostic about my favorite flavor to celebrate.
April 20th:
is there life out in space? alien life, plant or being,
perhaps we are not alone, the universe, full of creatures.
but we aren’t alone on earth, there are many around us.
The prompt for this poem was to write a verse in the Sijo Form. The Sijo form is a three lined poem; the first and second lines should have groupings of 3-4-4-4 syllables and the third line has a grouping of 3-5-4-3 syllables. Punctuation usually separates the groupings. The writer can take some liberty with the groupings for artistic effect though.
April 21st:
I spot a path but it is impassable
so I go back
pick a new path
but once again a dead end
I try and I try and I try
but none of the paths lead anywhere
I am stuck
I should have brought an axe

I had no ideas for writing for this poem, so I wrote a poem about that :).
April 22nd:
yellowish-green flickers of light
flit across a lawn
small hands reach, giggle, withdraw, reach out again
little black jewels with red heads
light up a glass jar
full of joy
The prompt for this poem was to use metonymy to invoke a specific place or time. I never really understood metonymy, but I tried to connect lightning bugs and childhood.
April 23rd:
the way your poem
reminds me to
look for the good
in every day,
in every way,
has helped me
more than you can know

The prompt for this poem was to respond to another poem. I chose "Dust of Snow" by Robert Frost is one of my favorite poems.
April 24th:
the burrowing balloon
is unmistakable
with its small sandy body
with bright yellow spots;
burrowing balloons
are most active
at dawn and dusk,
it hovers above the ground
near their burrows
that they have stolen
from other animals,
waiting -
for a mouse to appear
which it will snatch
with its long string
for a meal
The prompt for this poem was fun - find an article about an animal and replace the animal's name with another object, and work what you have into a poem. I chose an article about Burrowing Owls.
