Flying Jewels

A poem I wrote for my creative writing club, inspired by a trip to Scioto Audubon Metro Park in Columbus.

a single tree swallow

slices through the air,

its teal wings

shimmering in the sun,

its white body

reflected in the pond.

it is so beautiful I could shout for joy.

and then I turn the corner,

where a dozen swallows

dance above the water,

soaring, curving, diving

through the howling wind

in an impromptu ballet.

what a magical moment

to see sapphires flying.

This picture was taken by Phil McNeil, and is visible on All About Birds. Tree Swallows are the most beautiful birds I've ever seen, and my pictures didn't do them justice.
